Shoppers Drug Mart x Beauty Gives Back
Once a year Shoppers Drug Mart partners with Beauty Gives Back to put on a Spring Beauty Gala in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Tickets can be purchased for only $10.00. Half of the proceeds are donated in support of woman’s cancer and the remainder goes towards product discounts and various Gala activities, treats, and gift basket draws! I don’t know how much you all know about me, but in addition to all things makeup I am also extremely passionate about healthcare and giving back. I am a volunteer with Alberta Health Services and have been for over three years now. I volunteer at South Health Campus every week and absolutely love it (if you ever see me there in my red volunteer vest don’t hesitate to say hi)! I honestly can’t even begin to describe how great the environment is there, and how fulfilling it feels to be a part of it all! With that said, I am sure you can only imagine how thrilled I was to be contacted by Shoppers Drug Mart to be a part of their Spring Beauty Gala. It was the perfect opportunity for me to put my passion for both makeup and healthcare together for a valuable cause! I was able to give back by providing beauty consultations and makeup applications at my local Shoppers Drug Mart for a day. I did this for free and it was even more meaningful to me than any paid opportunity I’ve had! It was truly a humbling experience. I had such a great time and met so many amazing people. In addition to myself they also brought in local henna artist, Anilia from Glamour Studios here in Calgary, to offer her services and assist as a backup makeup artist during the rush. She was the absolute sweetest and made everyone feel at ease (including myself as I was a little nervous working this event for the first time). I have linked her website,, so feel free to check it out if you would like to book her or see some of her work!
A ton of photos were taken during the event which you can view by searching the hashtag #SDMbeautygala on Instagram. However, I have chosen to share a few of my personal favorites here because of the story that comes along with them. The two ladies getting henna in the photos truly melted my heart and you are about to find out why. The one with the glasses originally came in on her own while doing errands. While in the store she heard about the program, made a donation, and decided to get her makeup done for fun. She was so impressed with her makeup and couldn’t stop thanking me. She told me how she had a friend who never wears makeup, and that she has only been able to convince her to get it done once in their lives which was over 20 years ago. Needless to say, after seeing her transformation and feeling as good as she did she felt confident enough in my abilities to be the one to change her friend’s mind about makeup. She said she was going to show her friend and would be back with her. I was flattered, but thought nothing serious of it. Then a short while later they returned together! Her friend actually came in! She sat in my chair and trusted me to do her makeup without any hesitation. There they were, two lifetime friends experiencing this moment together and I got to be a part of it! And the best part of it all was how happy they were afterwards. The one who never wore makeup smiled as she looked in the mirror, took one of my cards and even asked me for makeup advice. After sharing a few tips on how we achieved her look I turned into a personal shopper. I don’t work at Shoppers Drug Mart, nor was it my role to help customers pick out makeup that day, but I was so honored to do it that I took the time away from my station to help her pick out a few of my favorite items that I thought would be perfect for her! It is causes and moments like this that keep me going and loving what I do!
