Some people recreate looks after the fact. I like to be on top of things and predict them beforehand. Above is a comparison photo of the two Oscar inspired looks that Missy from Salon Luminous and I put together earlier this month alongside actual celebrities from last night. Top row from left to right we have our model Zienab Hamdan side by side with award winning Brie Larson. Then on the bottom row from left to right we have our model Fatima Hamdan side by side with Daisy Ridley. This was our second attempt at doing this for an award show and I think it’s safe to say we nailed it… even right down to the poses! You can also see the last look we did for the Golden Globes here.
Given the magnitude of the award show I envisioned a show stopping dress in a deep royal shade. For some reason I was really drawn towards the color blue. Then of course I was also stuck on the idea of that one girl in something silver or beige with rhinestones and glitter galore. After looking at the options I had to pull from I was ecstatic to find two dresses that embodied just that! The blue dress was fitted at the top and flowed open widening towards the ground. It was a beautiful full length dress with silver and gold beaded embellishments accenting it, because of this not much accessorizing was required and I was able to pair it with small pearl earrings and a matching necklace. The second dress was a statement on its own. It was the type of dress that made me wish I had an event like the Oscars to attend just to give me an excuse to purchase it for myself! The light caught the rhinestones in every direction and completely it lit up the room! I thought that a necklace would have been too much, but pairing it with similar statement earrings was a must. Overall I can’t get over how pleased I am to have my vision brought to life, not only at the Salon but on the red carpet too!
Makeup for the event was simple. While some award shows call for bold sparkly or smoky eyes the Oscars is not one of them. Elegant events call for natural beauty enhancing makeup. The trick is to make the client look like she is barely wearing any makeup even though she is. Light silver, gold, champagne, or pearl colors can be used to shimmer. For more matte looks stick to softer colors like taupe, light pink, white or nudes. I went with a very dusty silver and gold shimmer to match the beading on the dress. Full details on the products used to achieve my makeup look, and step by step instructions, can be found here. I do not have full details on Missy’s look, but I do know that she choose to go with a babydoll look using soft pink eyeshadow and lipstick.
With how free flowing the blue dress was it was only natural to have the hair be the same. I wanted to keep it down and free to move, but tuck it back behind the models shoulders to ensure it did not hide the dress or pearl earrings. Missy also took the hair into consideration, because the dress had so much going on she wanted to keep the hair more simple to balance it all out. She went with a high pulled back bun to keep the hair out of her models way, and to allowed the focus to stay on the dress that she obviously wanted to show off!
